That Hair Though....

My hair, if it were to be described as something living it would be a wild animal that no one can completely tame, even I can't tame it! My hair has a complete life of its own and I've learned to just go with it. My hair style might suggest that I'm lazy (which is probably true) because I have no desire to do anything with it other than let it loose, or put it up in a bun, or pony. I usually don't let my hair loose at school because whenever I do people have the urge to touch it ( I'm serious, even the little sixth graders I don't even know touch my hair!).
I guess some people don't get the concept of 'if you run your fingers through black hair not only will I get mad but it will frizz and tangle', and trust me no one wants to brush this beast (it might bite back). My hair has a tremendous effect on my personality like when I let it loose it makes me super

spontaneous and gives me the feelings of being set free. My hair also makes me really impatient, seeing as I have to brush my hair for thirty minutes to get the tangles out. My hair also makes me confident because I've learned not to care what other people say about it.
I think my main goal with my hair is to keep it soft, long, and detangled, I don't really care what it looks like as long as it's not completely ghetto. Unlike other girls, my hair is at the bottom of my to do list so I'm not super obsessed with it (Afro's are the quickest and easiest way to go), but if i did do something with it I would probably straighten it just to mix it up, I don't like being bored with my hair.

I'm really proud of my curly hair as nice as I've kept it, I love my curls, I love the volume, and most of all I love it's diversity. Never be ashamed to be different, it just means you have a diverse heritage. Always be proud of who you are, even the smallest things (or biggest in my case) like your hair, embrace it, love it, and care for it.

Never give up

My family has always been big on grades, I guess that's a given for most families, but mine is very pushy on straight A's, not that I'm saying I have them, I will be the first to tell I don't, and I don't mind no one's perfect we all have our weaknesses.
My weakness as of now is math (most likely because I space out class, I can't help it! I get bored easily) but my dad sends me to math camps in the summer (to try and make me smarter?) and I will continue to work on this weakness of mine. To be perfectly honest, this blog isn't about math per se, but about over coming weaknesses.
I think my first big weakness was English (reading, writing, etc.) what really motivated me though, was the fact my older sister was better at doing it then I was (an unrequited sibling rivalry I guess), and the fact I would get bullied about it. I wanted prove to them I was smart, more so than they were, and thus began my rampage of studying. I use to stay up reading books beyond my reading level and a dictionary, trying to comprehend them, by the end of this I gained a new respect for classic books and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. I admit I sound a bit crazy, but who at the age of nine knew what the word 'castigated' meant?
Once I set my mind to something, I do it (usually). I guess this trait of mine is a good and bad thing, bad because it means I have a trouble backing down from a dare, but thankfully I'm not a ditz and i am street smart too. Unlike my sister, who is very gullible and fun to mess with.
In the end everyone has a weakness, having the courage to stand up and conquer it takes a lot of valor, but it is always worth it. The will to keep going even when you're frustrated and just feel like giving up, it's an experience everyone should feel, and the elated feeling you have once you have triumphed over that weakness will have made every step towards your goal worth it. So all in all, my message to you is; "Never give up and never give in."
Thanks for reading!! :)

Ya Gotta Keep Your Head Up

The worlds a crazy place, and to get through it, people usually do something that centers them, my "thing" is music.
Ever since I was a little girl music always had a way of moving me, and because my mom goes through some interesting phases, I have been introduced to many genres. My favorite of all the music my mom put me through was Ragge and hip-hop. Ragge kind of spoke to me and so did Rap, they made me feel like I wasn't the only one who went through struggles and I could relate to that, I also liked the beat of the music.
The whole beat thing didn't surprise me though, my mom was a dance teacher and some of that must have flowed into me, I use to dance when I was younger and I was the best in my class, my teacher use to say "Embody the beat" and that's exactly what I did.
Music has always been an escape for me, I've been through a lot of rough patches in my life and instead of retaliating in some stupid way, I would put my earphones on and just forget about it (at least until the song ended). I don't know about other people, but I think it's better to take some time to think about something or just clear your head, and the best way to do that is by listening to music, it's better than doing something you'll regret later.
When I didn't have a source of music I would make my own, either by rapping, beat-boxing,singing, or playing an instrument (usually a drum). I've always been pretty good at rhyming and I love poetry, for the longest time I thought I wanted to be a poet, this is no doubt due to all the rap and ragge I've listen to in my life.
In the end, I guess what I've been trying to say is; everyone needs to escape sometimes.
" I know it's hard sometimes, but remember one thing. Through every dark night there's a bright day after that. so no matter how hard it get, stick your chest out, keep ya head up...and handle it." -Tupac Shakur
Thanks for reading, I hope you got something out of it.

Pictured Memories

When thinking back to my childhood, many things pop out to me, but some of my fondest memories were being read to by my sister, teachers, and librarians.

One of my favorite books as a kid was Five Little Monkeys. I always found that picture book hilarious. I mean, why would the monkeys still jumping on the bed if their siblings are all falling off? In retrospect, I guess it was funny because I was at that age where everything was hilarious.

Another amazing picture book, at least to me, was James and the Giant Peach. I love that book, almost as much as the movie. Like I said before my sister usually read to me when I was young, but occasionally I read on my own, seeing as most picture books weren’t that sophisticated in its grammar. Even though the grammar in the picture books weren’t to terribly hard, it didn’t mean the story wasn’t deep. All picture books usually have a good plot and wise theme, for example Snow White taught children not to talk to strangers. Picture books always have an underling meaning, to teach what and what not to do, in an entertaining way.

As a kid picture books were an easier way to use my imagination, not that I didn’t have one, I mean I was a kid. But I have learned many ways to use my imagination in a productive way like art, I love art and I think that reading picture books as a child had something to do with it. If you’ve ever read Eric Carls book The Very Hungry Caterpillar you would definitely understand what I mean.

Picture books are the foundation of my childhood and who I am today, they’ve also taught me a lot of things, that without I would be unsafe. Picture books are amazing I hope you’ve had the chance to encounter one.
